"What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player." - John Wooden

To me, this quote means that who you are or what position you play in a game or sport does not necessarily define who you are as a person. For example, you could be one of the least contributing members of a particular team, but that does not mean that perhaps at home or in your community you do not contribute more than enough. The fact that you may not have a well known position in the team or that maybe it is not a very well liked position does not mean that you are perhaps in a low position elsewhere like at work or something. However, you do have to keep in mind that being a good player means that peoples' attention is focused on you so it wouldn't really be wise to be a great player and be a bad person outside of the game. You have to be a good person because then you do not become a target for the media and then you can continue to play and be a good person and be happy. Finally, I do agree with what this quote means, therefore I would definitely think twice about being a better person rather than being a greater basketball payer.
